Kloster is a strip of land on the edges of the west coast of Sweden designed by Torsten Ottesjö. Two years ago he selectively cut trees from the landscape to create a vision for what the rolling southern ends of the scandinavian fjords could look like. Kloster is an idea - built for a new class, a new market - It is complex, beautiful, biomorphic. It considers its environment and can house physical manifestations of online networks. It is a centre, a place where we believe that networks of people could meet during conferences, banquet dinners, residencies or summer residences, which would allow for the understanding of what a house placed within a landscape could be. The idea is that cattle would be allowed to free graze the landscape, slowly transforming the former forest floor to a grassland and with fertile gardens.

The Concept
<img src="http://payload85.cargocollective.com/1/2/71273/4010745/Kloster4-C-ChristianStromqvist-JagoSvensson.jpg" width="670" height="503" width_o="670" height_o="503" src_o="http://payload85.cargocollective.com/1/2/71273/4010745/Kloster4-C-ChristianStromqvist-JagoSvensson_o.jpg" data-mid="24239106" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload85.cargocollective.com/1/2/71273/4010745/Kloster5-C-ChristianStromqvist-JagoSvensson.jpg" width="670" height="503" width_o="670" height_o="503" src_o="http://payload85.cargocollective.com/1/2/71273/4010745/Kloster5-C-ChristianStromqvist-JagoSvensson_o.jpg" data-mid="24239107" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload85.cargocollective.com/1/2/71273/4010745/R5276657.jpg" width="670" height="502" width_o="670" height_o="502" src_o="http://payload85.cargocollective.com/1/2/71273/4010745/R5276657_o.jpg" data-mid="24283875" border="0" align="left"/>
Situated on the 62 acre landscaped property on the Swedish West Coast, Torsten Ottesjo. Christian Strömqvist, and David Relan have come up with an idea of luxury. The two houses are situated above a slope leading down to a dock and private beach, and are aligned to incorporate the ideal light conditions for the morning and scandinavian evenings respectively. The idea is to provide a shelter for networks to manifest, for conferences and classes, and generally to provide a means of inspiration to occur within groups and to the landscape they find themselves in. The structure of the complex is the curling of a leaf - a single surface extended above itself. It is the extension of a floor into a building. Buildings which are built facing the rise and fall of the light in summer. Windows which will diffuse light in at all times of the day and the play of perspectives. Kloster can be adjusted to any needs, but maintains its place, it's context. It is an environment - landscape and housing - designed for how we move, and how we may meet and we believe that considering these factors might change the depth of the meeting. Kloster is a new opportunity for connected living.

To place trees, or rather to discover the place that a forest creates. How can a forest be designed as something between untouched and tamed? What perspective is needed to allow the space for weathered trees, and allow their crowns to dominate the landscape. What are the aesthetics of a forest?

Lat Lindholmen samt 1:1 [pdf] in English
1:1 En skiss [pdf] på svenska

The project “1:1 A sketch” began two years ago with a group of people with experience from a variety of collective forms of living, most of them with different types of creative occupations. They all had similar ideas, and felt a need to find a new form of joint work- place and living space. They rented an industrial property in the industrial area Ringön in Gothenburg and started making it into a collective working and living space. The group had the idea to use as little of the space as possible for personal living, and as much as possible as common working space. They built small sleeping cab- ins and slept in them for a year.

A discussion on how to build a collective, which was both a common workplace and a common housing started. Almost everyone involved had some kind of creative job which could be carried out wholly or partly at home. A key aspect was that the members in the group defined themselves greatly with their professional work.

They wanted to be able to work on their projects and assignments at any time, because it was what felt was fun and relevant in their lives at that time. Their private lives were closely connected to their professional lives.

The group felt that much of the problem had to do with the physical space. They hoped to be able to provide an environment with inspiration and ideas and another approach to working and living. By changing the space to better promote the work and the social context, they thought they could be more creative in their projects. They also thought that increased productivity and progress of their work, in a functioning social context, would make them happier.

Their goal was to construct a situation that helped them in their work, from startup to completion. To build an environment where there was minimal resistance to start working. By surrounding themselves with friends who could provide feedback on one’s work or propose a break when it was needed, they could create a kind of positive “supervision” and a motivating environment. Another crucial aspect about living and working in the same place was to avoid having to commute to work.

The group came up with a concept that summed up their ideas: Allowing the workplace and housing to be located in the same place. The creative work is the norm for the organization of the collective. Leisure and social life subordinated to the work, but still fits in the same arena. You take your leisure time when you need it. The first phase of the project was built on an industrial plot in Backa, Gothenburg. But the area was difficult to reach by public transport and it was an area that was completely deserted in the evenings and weekends.

LAT felt that they needed an area with more life and the second phase of the project has been built up in a house on Lindholmen, Gothenburg which has better public transport and is a more vivid neighborhood with both housing and work places. At the end of January 2010 we visited the group in their new apartment and talked to one of the founders Torsten Ottesjö about their ideas about housing and living. In phase two the group brought with them the experience from the first phase. They started discussing their needs and made a number of full scale prototypes before deciding on how the apartment should look. One of the things they had learned from the first phase was that coziness and aesthetics were much more important than they had previously thought.

The apartment has a minimal entrance hall in connection with the kitchen and the big working studio that makes up most of the space. Most of the apartment is visible already from here. The current apartment is 115 sq meters. The sleeping cabins are stacked on top of each other to save space and are situated between the kitchen and the working studio. Soundproofed cells for sleeping was also a new feature in phase two which meant that the members of the group did not have to adjust their circadian rhythm to each other. The house has four sleeping cabins, each with ventilation and a window through which you can see what happens in the rest of the apartment. Each cabin is between 120-160 cm high and has a mattress and a shelf for personal things. The measurements of the cabins are made in order to be able to crouch inside them. You are not able to see all corners of the cabin from one place which makes the room seem bigger. On top of the cabins small shelves are created where you can sit and work overlooking the working studio. One of the cabins is today used as a small hotel room called Creators Inn, where artists, musicians and other people with creative occupations can stay for free for a night or sometimes for weeks.

Hönshus-1 is a wooden hens house designed and built by Torsten Ottesjö situated on the west coast of Sweden. It rests on a framework of steel legs drilled into rock. The house was designed to mimic the way a mother hen spreads her wings to protect her young. It is perched on a rock slope overlooking an inlet and allows its current feathered residents a sea view. The house is programmed to mimic natural lighting conditions within the house, and therefore provide the chickens a natural daylight rythym. The hens house is the second in a series of biomorphic strucures built by Torsten. He is inspired by nature, improvisation, and simplicity.

A gigantic system for systematizing books. My client only had one wish for the bookcase - they wanted to place as many books as possible in the room. As a response I envisioned what the practical constraints of a bookshelf were. What were the priorities? What were the traditional limitations? Books would need to be accessible of course, they would also need to be categorized in some manner. Traditionally bookshelves are built with symmetrical shelves where in a library books could be categorized alphabetically. What I wanted to instead emulate was how we are able to locate things in complex structures such as cities or landscapes, where we are still able to discover and categorize volumes of information within organic or industrial systems of growth.

Hus-1 is a small house designed and built by Torsten Ottesjö. The building was constructed on site. The idea is a dwelling as personification. The dwelling features convex walls which seam together with the floor creating both a sense of airiness and a naturally curved seating space along the sides of the interior. The structure is free-standing, so it can be moved anywhere; though the feeling is that it has actually sprouted out of the ground it rests on.

The 25 sqm house aims to provide a living space beyond understanding. It is supposed to fit, to enable - not to distract or cause attention. Hus 1 regularly houses two people all year round but visiting friends always have room. Kitchen, sleeping quarters, dinner table, hallway and other functions are well integrated on just 25 square metres of living space.

NatureBuildings are often seen as rigid and ugly, while untouched Nature is considered as being undoubtedly beautiful. Trying to reproduce Nature may be seen as ugly, but never the original in itself. The untamed Nature is a source of incessant beauty. Why is this? Is it because the beauty of Nature lies in its complexities and its eternal variety? Our mind is simply stimulated by our insufficiency in facing its details. We are intrigued and inspired by that which we cannot understand or even grasp.

Just like the numerous forms of the branches of a tree, humans love Nature in a variety of ways. Is it possible to build a house which can be loved by so many in countless different ways? I wanted to try to build a house which was seen as beautiful in the same complex way as Nature. Angles and flat levels are at odds with the creation of Nature, but what are the alternatives? How do you build something that feels unconstructed? How can you imitate Nature in the form of a house?

By using doubled-curved surfaces and complex forms, I wanted to adapt the house to Nature’s infinite variety of form.

I wanted the house to be difficult to overlook, no matter what the angle or the shape. Whether we look at it from either the outside or the inside, a lot is still left open. I believe we grow wiser if we are not given all the answers directly. Instead we get used to the fact that we cannot know everything. We learn to make decisions in relation to our surroundings and the square block-shaped architecture that surrounds us encourages a simplistic logic. It is not a suitable environment for humans.

SizeFew people have a larger volume than 0,1 m3 but many live in a home larger than 100 m3. This depends on our need for space in order to move around freely. We need to focus our eyes on different distances. We enjoy space. However, don’t we often have too much? What is it that makes a room spacious? Is it necessarily its size in cubic metres?

It is more common to hear a person express love for a car than for a house. I believe it has to do with scale. It is easier to feel the connection with a car since its volume resembles our own. On that basis I think it should be possible to build a house that is actually quite small but which feels large and spacious. I wanted to adapt the size of the house to suit the movements of the body and to make it completely comfortable to be in. Wherever a person comes in contact with the building it should be tailored for the form and the mechanics of the human body.

Except for our own volume, we surround ourselves with furniture. Why all these objects? In practical terms, we need extremely few things to survive, but we may feel happier surrounded by beautiful things. Apart from the vital things we need, we want beauty, stimulus and comfort in order to function and enjoy ourselves.

The BodyFurniture and other box-shaped objects are often ponderous and suited for simplistic volumes such as cubic rooms and not necessarily for the human body. The body is complex in the same way as Nature and therefore needs a complex environment. A room is meant for human bodies and not for boxes.

I wanted to work with all surfaces of the room and create a room which in itself was comfortable. I wanted to create surfaces where you can sit and stand, lean against and lay on, giving you the ability to lean comfortably against the walls as if they were the back of an armchair. By optimizing the whole room, you liberate a lot of volume which in its turn makes a small room spacious. In my mind, a well-designed room does not need to be big or filled with furniture.

FootprintApart from appealing to human scale, what other advantages are there in building a small house?

Small houses are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. They demand less building material and are therefore cheaper. They are more easily heated and cleaned. The impact of a small house is limited, both when it comes to resources as well as the land where it is placed. Small houses are also more easily handled and transported. I wanted to have the opportunity to build the whole house in a hallway in order to lift it easily and transport it, by road, in one piece.

I have been inspired by the various forms of Nature but also by airplanes, cars, boats and bridges. They all have a very specific function and aesthetic and are freer in their forms than houses. These constructions require a lot; the construction needs to be both light and strong, adapted to weather, to be both resistent to air and water, to be safe, comfortable and to have an appealing outside as well as inside. These constructions more often have a more optimized thought behind it than found in conventional architecture.

MaterialWood was chosen for a number of reasons, I needed to work with doubled-curved surfaces, it was necessary that the material was easily shaped. The building also needed to be economically justifiable and the material easily manufactured, processed and handled. Therefore, wood plays a prominent role in the framework, insulation, surface layer and fittings consist of wood or wood-based products.

Wood was also chosen out of consideration for biodegradation and sustainability as well as for the way the material ages. Wood is beautiful in that is has a memory. Changes in the environment are illustrated by the life and ageing of the wood. You can see the users historic impact on the material as it slowly wears away. I wanted this life to be seen. Surface treatments have been chosen with care, without taking out the rubbed, sometimes planed patina of the ash, the spruce and the aspen. On the whole, surface layers have been kept untreated and have been whitepigmented with linseed oil or heat treated and oiled.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/71273/1115025/2plan hus ett.jpg" width="670" height="383" width_o="670" height_o="383" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/71273/1115025/2plan hus ett_o.jpg" data-mid="19769232" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/71273/1115025/Bild.jpg" width="670" height="447" width_o="670" height_o="447" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/71273/1115025/Bild_o.jpg" data-mid="19769244" border="0" align="left"/>
ChallengesHus 1 represents an experiment in architecture and is a prototype, and it's construction reflected this. Torsten's working methods were therefore filled with analysis, studies and tests in order to find the right product and approach. Knowledge of the wood’s qualities, searching for the right method and discussions with special advisors have all helped to complete the project.

The building is very stable despite the lightweight construction of bended and glued dry wood. The glulam construction was set up in situ. It was covered with reinforced board which turns the construction into a framework with a surrounding body. The load is distributed across larger areas which leads to increased durability.

Thanks to the building construction, moisture is evenly absorbed and distributed. All walls and roofs have a surface layer of biodegradable, cellulose-based, reinforced board which is resistent to water and wind, but open for moisture. This two-way directed moisture transfer is beneficial in times when the building is out of use or not heated. The spruce roof shingle is a porous layer which allows moisture to diffuse through the roof underlay.
